Some information about the volunteer effort
H.U.R.T. Hawaii have some new information about the volunteer effort taking place, now that the official engangement by HFD is ended.
Information from experienced orienteering runners
Anders and Morten has been in contact with experienced orienteering runners, in an attempt to better understand how Are, himself an orienteering runner, would read the terrain in the situation he was in and how he would try to rectify mistakes made when getting back to his car.
The run:
On Saturday May 14 Are joined 4 members of H.U.R.T. Hawaii and another runner for a run on the Peacock Flats. He was at Dillingham Air Tower (Point A) around 6:30 a.m. getting there by a borrowed car. The runners headed up the Kealia Trail (Points B,C,D) and at Point I where Kealia Trail meets Kuaokala Road (Pink) turned to their right. From there they went to Point J, followed the green trail to Point K. They followed the red trail till Point L where it meets the Pink trail, followed the pink trail till Point M where it meets the yellow trail (Kuaokala Ridge Road) at Point M. They followed Kuaokala Ridge Rd. (a single track trail) to Point H where a water stash was located. He drank some water and filled up his bottles.
Point H is where Are was last seen. He and another runner started ahead of the group down the pink trail to where it meets up with Kealia Trail at Point I. Somehow they got separated. On the way down the other runner made a mistake at Point D by going down the blue trail for about 3 minutes, realizing his mistake got back up on the Kealia trail and continued down through points D,C,B to his car at A.
Status:
- Are never got down to his car at Point A. The car was later found with Ares belongings in it.
- Hikers on Kealia Trail(yellow) have confirmed they only saw one runner comming down on the lower parts.
- The other runners from H.U.R.T. didn't see Are on the way down.
- 3 days of search by volunteers, HFD, HPD and local search and rescue teams by foot, helicopter and with dogs have given no results.
