- Ares parents, his sister and Anders will join the search today
- People from H.U.R.T. and UH will be there
- Most likely search areas for the day are just north of water stash (H) and around blue trail.
- No practical way of transporting people into search area, a lot of time being lost on getting there. Hopefully this will be resolved today.
- At least 25 people are joining the search today
Are has been missing on Oahu, Hawaii since May 14. The intention of this blog is to disseminate information about the search for him.

I regret to report that we found the body of Are Hjorungnes today. About 23 volunteers, mostly from HTMC, showed up for the search effort coordinated by Fred Bolls. Based on a hunch that he might have run out of time and tried to descend the cliffs I suggested we search one ridge over to the east of the Kealia Trail, Our group -- consisting of Justin Ohara, Gavin Terukina, August Smith and I found his body about nearly half way up the ridge below a steep rock face about 40 feet high. We speculate he fell off the cliff during his descent. Deepest sympathy to the family of Are Hjorungnes.

great to know no one got hurt during the search and rescue.
ReplyDeleteI have no words to express my pain for the loss of Are. The only thing that comforts me is that God allowed me to know him and be his friend. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will never forget that smiling face and his sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteMy condolences to his huge family that includes not only his lovely parents and sister but also his thousands of adopted brothers and sisters around world.
As he used to call himself to me, I am deep saddened that Prof. Normal is not with us anymore. I will never forget you my dear friend!!!!

I am very saddened by the loss of my nephew Are. The world lost a brilliant scientist; the family and friends lost a true human being, jolly and full of life. The only thing that comforts me is that he lived as he liked, and certainly, he was happy when he left us. My love and my sympathy to Are's family and friends. Sandra Maciel
ReplyDeleteI was deepely sad when I first saw the news. His smiling face, laught and many of the good things we shared together come to my mind often(as it has been these days). Are loved life deepely and what happened is in a way an expression of this. While in Brazil he often justified decisions of exposing himself to risk (as he did impetuously from time to time) by saying "I am a viking" and laughting his characteristic loud laugh with one eye half closed. Dear Are, our viking, we will never forget you. Diana, Fatima and Roberto
ReplyDeleteWords cannot express the sadness I feel from the loss of Are. Only one year ago, I saw the smile on his face when I graduated. I never thought I'd be his "last" PhD student, but, sadly, I am. He has been a wonderful mentor, friend, and colleague. He made us happy in tough times and always found a way to comfort us.
ReplyDeleteI will never forget Are, and I am sure he is in a better place, may his soul rest in peace, and my deep condolences goes to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
